Background

Langdon Place is a small cul de sac in Mortlake with 18 households. The houses were built as social housing the in 1920s, but most are now privately owned, with some as rental properties.

Originally, there was a grassed area in the middle of the cul de sac with benches, which was used as a social space for the families; kids would play and there was even a Langdon Place Football Team.

Neighbours who have lived in Langdon Place for over 50 years recall the grassed area fondly and remember the tarmacked island being built to create parking spaces and to make a ‘centre feature’ in the 1970s. The area had been concreted over some time prior to the tarmac being installed. One neighbour recalls: “As kids we were very upset to see that ugly thing put down, it’s been there for around 50 years now.”
